Classroom Noise Monitor preview

Features for better classroom self-regulation

Live visual feedback that helps students manage classroom volume without constant reminders.

Live volume meter

Real-time, color-coded ambient sound levels rendered big enough for the whole class to read from any seat.

Per-activity thresholds

Set lower limits for testing and reading, higher for collaboration — switch presets in a single tap.

Animated student-facing cue

A friendly character moves from happy to overwhelmed as volume climbs, giving students an immediate, age-appropriate signal.

No audio recorded

The meter reads volume only — nothing is captured, stored, or sent off your device. Safe for any classroom.

Projector-ready

Big fullscreen display readable from across a typical classroom, library, or lab.

Works on any device

Browser-based — runs on Chromebooks, iPads, school PCs, and laptops with a microphone and modern browser.

As easy as 1, 2, monitor!

Three quick steps to show volume levels and help students self-correct.

Allow the microphone

Grant browser microphone access so the meter can read volume locally — no audio leaves the room.

Set the noise limit

Pick a threshold that fits the activity — quiet, conversation, or workshop volume.

Project and let go

Display the meter and let students self-correct when the cue turns yellow or red.

Got questions? We have answers!

Can't find what you're looking for? We're here to help.

Can multiple teachers use it at the same time?

Absolutely! Since Classroom Noise Monitor runs entirely in your browser with no account or login required, each teacher can use it independently on their own device. Every classroom session is completely separate. There's no data sharing or interference between users. Each teacher controls their own sensitivity settings and pearl tracking.

How accurate are the decibel readings?

The decibel readings are approximate, designed for relative classroom feedback rather than professional acoustic measurement. Accuracy depends on your device's microphone quality. For classroom management, precise dB numbers aren't needed. Puffy's color-coded reactions (cyan for quiet, yellow for active, red for too loud) give clear visual guidance. The sensitivity slider lets you fine-tune how responsive Puffy is to your specific room.

What if the tool isn't detecting sound?

First, check that your browser has microphone permission. You'll see a prompt when you click Start. If you denied it, check your browser's site settings. Make sure your mic isn't muted in system settings. Try increasing the sensitivity slider. The tool works best in modern browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. If problems persist, refresh the page or try a different browser.

Do I need special equipment?

No special equipment needed! The tool works with any device that has a microphone: laptops, tablets, Chromebooks, or desktops with a connected mic. For best results, place the device centrally and display on a screen all students can see, like a projector or Smartboard. Everything runs in your browser. No app to install, no software to maintain.

How does the pearl reward system work?

Puffy tracks how long students maintain appropriate noise levels (quiet or active zones). For every 60 seconds of good behavior, the class earns a pearl. The pearl counter is displayed prominently so students can see their progress in real-time. You decide what pearls mean for your class: extra recess, free time, or any reward you choose. At the end of a session, the summary page shows total pearls earned alongside achievement badges.

Can I adjust how sensitive the monitoring is?

Yes! The sensitivity slider (0–100%) lets you control how reactive Puffy is to noise. Set it higher for activities where you need strict quiet (like tests), or lower for group work where some noise is expected. You can adjust it in real-time during a session without interrupting. The noise zones (quiet, active, and too loud) are pre-calibrated for typical classroom environments.

How does the noise monitoring actually work?

The system uses your device's microphone to continuously measure ambient noise using the Web Audio API. It converts sound intensity into approximate decibel readings and displays them through Puffy, who physically puffs up as noise increases and calms down when it's quiet. All processing happens locally in your browser. No audio is ever recorded, stored, or transmitted. When noise exceeds the threshold, Puffy turns red and plays a gentle "shhh" sound to remind students.

Is student data private and safe?

Yes! Privacy is built into the design, not bolted on. No audio is ever recorded, stored, or sent to any server. The app only measures volume levels locally on your device using the Web Audio API. No student names, accounts, or personal information are collected. There are no cookies, no tracking, and no analytics on student behavior. The tool is designed to be compliant with FERPA and COPPA requirements since it simply doesn't collect any data to begin with.

Why should I upgrade to Pro?

Pro adds unlimited cloud-saved whiteboards with every tool as a widget, multi-device sync across laptop, classroom PC, and tablet, priority support, and 30 monthly AI credits that work across all our AI generation tools (lesson plans, rubrics, quizzes, worksheets). New tool requests get fulfilled within 7 days.
