🐧 Penguin Colony 🐧

When the class is quiet, penguins leap out of the sea one by one and waddle onto the ice. When it gets too loud, the penguins slide back into the water! If it stays loud, a snowstorm blows in and they get even shyer.

Class goal: Bring all nine penguins onto the ice before the lesson ends!

How Penguin Colony works

1. Head to Antarctica

Choose a lesson length, press Head to Antarctica, and allow the microphone. The monitor listens for a moment to learn how your room sounds when it is calm.

2. Quiet brings the penguins ashore

While the room stays calm, nine penguins leap out of the sea and waddle onto the ice one by one: emperors, kings, gentoos, a rockhopper and a fluffy chick.

3. Noise sends them sliding

Too much chatter startles the colony and the penguins belly-slide back into the water, only coming back once it is calm. Tip: pair it with a penguin science lesson and let students name each species as it arrives.

Penguin Colony questions

Is Penguin Colony free to use?

expand_more

Penguin Colony is a Pro theme. Lifetime Pro is a one-time $20 payment that unlocks every theme, unlimited session time, and priority support. You can try the monitor for free first with the Quiet Jungle, Dino Valley, Hush Safari, Calm Aquarium, Traffic Lights, Focus Mode, and Bouncy Balls themes.

Can the class lose progress in Penguin Colony?

expand_more

Yes, sustained noise has consequences here. If the room stays loud for too long a snowstorm blows in and the penguins retreat into the sea, so students have a real reason to settle down quickly. A few seconds of calm stops the damage.

What age group is Penguin Colony best for?

expand_more

Penguin Colony works from preschool through grade 5 and fits any time of the winter, not just the holidays. Realistic penguins make it a good match for science units on Antarctica and animal habitats.

The Penguin Colony scene isn't reacting to sound. What should I check?

Your computer is probably listening to the wrong microphone. Interactive whiteboards often take over as the default mic when they're connected. During a session, open the settings (the tune icon in the top right) and pick your computer's built-in microphone. The choice is remembered for future sessions.
